Character: Lie Ren
Age: ~19
Canon: RWBY
Canon Point: Post Volume 6
Background: Ren at the RWBY Wiki
Personality:
Lie Ren, more known by his family name than his first name, is not a man of many words. In any scenario and with anybody he's with, he's the quiet type. Ren is more of an observer and a doer rather than the type of person who lights up the room with his bubbly personality and loud voice. The way he presents himself, perhaps people may consider him a wallflower, but he's actually not the kind of person who hates communication, despite his quiet nature.
Ren is, at the forefront, a very calm guy. He's first introduced in the series with his childhood friend, Nora, who's chattering away and talking to Ren about their plans while he listens quietly and calmly, only offering his input at the right time. In the face of a King Taijitu, a large snake-like Grimm with two heads, he remains relaxed and addresses the situation with much control. When his teammates don't really know what to do or are out of strategies, he's not one to panic, and instead remains even-tempered.
He's also regarded to be very studious and is even described as the "perfect student". He agrees with the notion that libraries are for reading, and when he's not cooking or meditating, he can be seen reading a book. That's not to say that he doesn't get in trouble, though. Being in a team with Jaune Arc, Pyrrha Nikos, and Nora Valkyrie meant that he too was scolded many times by their professors for causing trouble, being late, or being late and causing trouble at the same time.
A huge factor in Ren's life happens to be Nora, who he met when they were both just children. His village was being attacked and he was hiding from the Nuckelavee when he comes across Nora, who also happened to be hiding under a house. Her negative emotions could have attracted the Grimm to them, but he was able to use his Semblance (which will be explained in the abilities section!) to calm her down. After that, Nora became the only family Ren had, and vice versa. Nora then grew up to be a bubbly, loud, and emotional young lady, who just happens to compliment Ren's quiet and collected nature. One can even interpret Ren to be the way he is because somebody has to keep Nora in line.
He used to be a sassy child, as his mother would put it. He had more life in him, cheerful and demanding, but the death of his parents and meeting Nora changed all that. It doesn't mean that all Ren is is just calm, though. Ren is still capable of being sassy despite himself. Just because Ren is quiet doesn't mean he just absorbs things like a sponge and lets other people speak on his behalf. Oftentimes, he speaks to become the straight man of the group, telling Nora that sloths don't sound like the way Nora imagines them to be, or telling everyone that it's just a dream that Nora has, when she tells a ridiculous story about the two of them fighting a bunch of Beowulves (yet another type of Grimm). When he's not playing the straight man, though, he offers words of wisdom - words that actually make people think and reflect, and in a way, pause and calm down.
Ren may seem to have an infinite amount of patience, and perhaps he does, but much like everyone, he's more than meets the eye. For the longest time, growing up, he'd been quiet and keeping to himself and Nora. Nobody in Beacon really knew much about Ren, but they all definitely saw him as the one who never breaks his cool. However, upon coming across the Nuckelavee during their travels, he actually loses his cool. His emotions burst out, showing his more reckless side that comes alongside his anger and fear of the Nuckelavee. In an attempt to avenge his parents and the rest of the people it's killed, he attacks without warning and without much thinking. It was only when Nora slaps him before he tried to charge in again that he calms down and realises that he had acted rashly. By the time he, with the help of Nora, Jaune, and Ruby, deliver the final blow, he's a lot more calm and together. It's because he had finally avenged his family and his village that he feels more at peace with his past and towards the latter volumes, he begins to express himself a bit more.
It could also be because of his past and how he had to be more mature for his age to be able to take care of himself and Nora, but he's conscious of his health and the health of others. Apart from being the quiet one in JNPR (which later on becomes a mix of the remaining members of RWBY and JNPR), he's also the cook of the group. His pancakes are sought after, but besides that, he also makes all kinds of smoothies which don't tend to be favourable to everybody else because of the vegetables and other healthy things he puts in them. If you look deeper, Ren has groomed himself to take care of people: Nora, in particular. He puts others' needs before his own that when it was him who was having trouble, he didn't know how to stay calm and he didn't know how to let someone (Nora) take care of him. He cares about people and wants to be able to provide comfort for them, which explains why his Semblance, which happens to be the manifestation of his soul, is the way it is.
Abilities:
Aura — In the RWBY universe, Aura is the manifestation of one's soul. Aura can be used in various ways, but most of the time, in the context of RWBY, Aura is used as a means of protecting one's self and increasing one's abilities. In layman's terms, Aura is a RWBY character's HP. Ren will be able to take as many hits before his Aura gets low. It's when a person's Aura is depleted that they will receive mortal injuries.
(More information regarding Aura and how it can be used can be found here.)
Semblance — A unique manifestation of one's innate and personal power which is directly related to one's Aura. Without Aura, a person can't use their Semblance. Ren's Semblance doesn't have a specific name compared to Weiss Schnee's Glyphs or Ruby Rose's Speed, but it can be described as the ability to mask negative emotions. When used, it helps calm people and has an immediate effect.
Alignment: As somebody whose default state is calm, Sosyne fits as Ren's alignment very well.
Other: Take a shot for every mention of "calm" in this app...

[ Ah, the Grand Central Library. This might just be the best place in Empatheias. It's quiet and peaceful, which Ren likes. Now with a cup of tea situated at his desk and a book in hand, he is ready to relax for the day after making people stay quiet upon entering the library, alphabetising the books and following the system the Verens library uses for organising everything. He's actually done a very decent job, and people who do a very decent job, in Ren's opinion, deserves a good rest.
He's pretty sure there are only a handful of people left in the library now that it's past sundown, so anybody who comes to his desk is just likely to check out books to borrow and not somebody who needs to be shown where a certain book is or where the bathroom is because they really need to go.
That is... until he hears a loud thump, anyway! He springs into action immediately, the book he'd been holding and was just about to read being left on the table as he looks for the source of the noise. When he finds it, he shakes his head and offers a smile to the young lady who had been trying to reach for a book but ended up toppling over an entire bookshelf and letting everything land on her on the floor.
Once he's brought the lady to the nearby clinic, he goes back to the library and takes his place again in his seat. There's still another hour before the library closes. Five people left, which is a lot less than the number of people earlier. Good, he can read in peace, and he actually manages to do so, only closing his book finally five minutes before closing time so he can properly check each corner of the building if it's clean and orderly. He realises, upon standing up, however, that a bunch of lotuses have sprouted from the ground, possibly from the satisfied feeling he'd been having from reading a nicely written piece of literature. ]
Not again...
[ He sighs and grabs the broom. He'll be closing later than usual tonight since he has to clean it up... ]
